Niwagekidan
Penino took its departure from the Drama Society of Medical School in the Showa
University in 2000. It was established for presenting various freewheeling forms
of expression based on an abstract image of the ‘garden.’ They have been aiming
at achieving ‘Form beyond Formula,’ transcending the existing framework of drama,
through their performances in so-called non-theatrical space such as Tanino’s
own flat and outdoor tent, and installation-like performances. Tanino, leading the company, is in charge of writing and directing plays; his first full-fledged work as a playwright, Fortification of Smiles (2007) and metatheatrical Starry Shadow Jr. (2008), in which children in an educational program played a pseudo family, were nominated to the final candidates of Kishida Drama Award two years in a row. The company also performed oversea: a drama festival in Taiwan in 2004 and one in Germany in 2009 ? they have been invited to such festivals in Switzerland and the Netherlands in 2010. Their unique imagination and direction attracted public attention in producing ‘The Town where the Sun and Underwear are seen’ in their first participation in Festival Tokyo in 2009. Tanino is also keen on being active outside the company, and has demonstrated his abilities in varied fields as a playwright and director, by tackling classic dramas and providing quality and detailed direction |

Kuro Tanino Born in 1976 in Toyama
prefecture. Aside from his activities as the playwright, director, and leader
of Niwagekidan Penino, he works as a psychiatrist for ‘day job.’ In 2000, when
he was a medical student at Showa University, he joined a theatre club and founded
Niwagekidan Penino. Tanino, who is a hobby sculptor and painter, is strongly attached
to every detail of the stage design, a fact that is relating to his directing
style as well as his personal delusions and simple fantasy. |
